Anthony is from the Patuwai hapu, a sub tribe of Ngati Awa and hails from Motiti Island. Having graduated with Honours in Architecture, Anthony studied Civil Engineering also at the University of Auckland.  A former associate of the renown Dutch practice Mecanoo, Anthony is the founding partner of London-based WHAT_architecture, recipients of awards incl. RIBA National Award, the Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building and a Civic Trust Award. Anthony has taught at two of the world's best architecture schools (The Bartlett and the Architecture Association) and was a Visiting Professor at the TU Delft (publishing the spatial mobility book ROAM (BDP London 2003)), the American University of Beirut and Sint Lucas Brussels. Anthony developed practice-based research - the Game of Architecture - via an invitational doctorate with the RMiT.
