R4: REDEVELOP

Redevelopment would consist of repairing, restoring and reusing Hinemihi, but in addition adding a whare manaaki (services building) would allow Hinemihi to provide facilities that include cooking and washing facilities as well as a performance awning. These additional spaces would be designed sympathetically so as to not overpower Hinemihi or the gardens in which she is sited. A services building could be designed so as to be more or less invisible, using the surface of ground as camouflage; a performance awning could be designed so as to be pop-up, that is, erectable by two people. Redevelopment is the strategy that would allow Hinemihi to be used as a fully functioning marae.

Prior to the formation of Te Maru, redevelopment has been the preferred option of the Hinemihi project steering group and formed the basis of  a Heritage Lottery Fund application bid in 2011. This is consistent with the views presented from Ngati Hinemihi and has received the support of the British based Maori diaspora represented in the National Trust stakeholder group.
